Jagland on the list of candidates for the post of Secretary General

When they met i Madrid 12 of May, the Foreign Ministers from the Council of Europe member states adopted a resolution on the appointment of Secretary General of the Council of Europe. Only two names were retained on the list that will be forwarded to the Parliamentary Assembly.

The governments of Norway, Belgium, Hungary and Poland had presented candidates to the important position as new Secretary General of the Council of Europe. The Ministers for foreign Affairs from the 47 Council of Europe member states met in Madrid 12 May and they adopted a resolution on the list of candidates for the post of Secretary General of the Council of Europe to be forwarded to the Parliamentary Assembly. After having interviewed the four candidates in April, the Committee of Ministers finally decided to transmit to the Parliamentary Assembly, the following candidates, listed in alphabetical order, to the post as Secretary General of the Council of Europe:

Mr Wlodzimierz CIMOSZEWICZ (Poland) and Mr Thorbjørn JAGLAND (Norway).

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe is due to elect a new Secretary General in June in Strasbourg.
