The Council of Europe and the Rule of Law
13/03/2009 //
The rule of law is one of the three core principles of the Council of Europe, along with the enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms and the concept of genuine democracy (1949 Statute, recital 3 of the preamble and Article 3).
The document "The Council of Europe and the Rule of Law - An overview" of November 2008 prepared by the Council of Europe's secretariat under the Swedish Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers, provides insight into how the concept of the rule of law is understood within the Council of Europe and how various activities of the Organisation contribute to strengthening and upholding the rule of law.
